The Job: The Painter applies coats of paint, varnish, stain enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimming, and fixtures of buildings and other structures. 

This is a 40 hour/week union position with regular hours Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm and occasional overtime.

Responsibilities:

  • Reads work order or receives instructions from supervisor regarding painting.
  • Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other filler.
  • Selects premixed paints, or mixes required portions of pigment, oil, and thinning and drying substances to prepare paint that matches specified colors.
  • Removes fixtures such as pictures and electric switch covers from walls prior to painting.
  • Spreads drop cloths over floors and room furnishings, and covers surfaces such as baseboards, door frames, and windows with masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.
  • Paint surfaces with brushes, spray gun, or paint rollers.
  • Simulates wood grain, marble, brick, or tile effects.
  • Applies paint with cloth, brush, sponge, or fingers to create special effects.
  • Erects scaffolding, sets up ladders or operates powered lift equipment to perform tasks above ground level.
  • Washes surfaces prior to painting with mildew remover.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies.
  • Estimates time and materials for assigned tasks.
  • Repairs plaster and lathe, walls and ceilings.
  • Installs and dismantles permanent and temporary exhibits.
  • Applies joint compound and tape to dry wall to achieve a finished wall surface.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Measurable Expectations
  • The ability to complete required Preventative Maintenance assignments within required time as per work instruction/order.
  • Close out work assignments as scheduled daily.
  • Accountable for all your daily work assignments and/or work orders within the provided computer-based system.
  • Ability to account for and document parts used for a repair or replacement on the required work instruction/order.
  • Responsible for inventory and reconciling inventory of related equipment and materials needed to complete required jobs on a yearly basis.

Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years of related experience. Certificate from college or technical school is a plus.
  • High school diploma or GED is required; paint training from a technical school is a plus.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Able to work nights, holidays, and weekends as needed.
  • Languages :
    • Ability to read ad interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
    • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of the organization.
  • Mathematical :
    • ​​​​​​​Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
    • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Reasoning :
    • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. 
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Physical :
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear.
    • The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
    • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Work Environment :
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
    • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration.
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
