Washington Adventist University is seeking applications for an undergraduate chemistry
professor. Primary consideration will be given to individuals with a Ph.D. in organic, analytical, or physical chemistry. The successful candidate will be responsible for up to three chemistry courses per semester, academic advising and assessment, and other duties. BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION
  • Teach two to three chemistry courses per semester. One course will typically be an upper-division course (biochemistry, quantitative analysis, or physical chemistry) while the other two will be lower division.
  • Develop an elective course in area of expertise.
  • Design small research projects that will serve as supplementary academic activities for selected students, with strong scientific inclinations.
  • Advise Biochemistry undergraduates in their academic careers. Help them devise class schedules each semester and keep them focused on meeting graduation requirements.
  • Assist in maintaining and operating the chemistry laboratories. This includes overseeing undergraduate teaching assistants and waste management.
  • Serve on at least two college committees.
  • Develop a network of contacts to assist our students in tapping into the wealth of the chemistry community found in the Washington, D.C. area.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ph.D. degree in General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry or/and Biochemistry, Chemical Sciences, or a related field from an accredited university.
  • Post-doctoral experience desired
  • Prior college or university teaching experience preferred.
  • Ability to integrate technology into course delivery and practical life applications.
  • Ability to communicate and work with a diverse population of students both in and outside the classroom via a Learning Management System platform (Desire2Learn, D2L).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of, and commitment to, the university’s philosophy and mission.

Expanded Job Description for Chemistry Faculty
  • Teach two to three chemistry courses per semester. The preferred candidate will be qualified to teach courses in organic chemistry, quantitative analysis, and/or physical chemistry. Other teaching assignment could include a non-majors course for allied health or College Chemistry. The normal teaching load will be 24 semester hours of course-work per academic year. Each course will require the organization, development, and supervision of a two-to-three-hour lab session per week. The laboratory courses address practical elements in each course, as well as the use and mastering of techniques useful in a job-related setting. Undergraduate teaching assistants are normally available for lower-division laboratory sessions.
  • Develop a course in the area in which the terminal degree was awarded in, or similar. This course is expected to complement the overall emphasis of the program, which includes preparing students pursuing careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and in the biotechnology sector. Course should consist of an upper division course, with or without a laboratory component and may field trips possibilities, internships, and research assistantship for qualified students.
  • Design relative small-scale research projects involving existing resources and requiring some additional investment. A record of extramural support desired but not required. Opportunities for small-scale projects may include summer research activities and programs available for visiting high school students.
  • Advise Biochemistry undergraduates in their academic careers. In addition, there is a possibility of advising pre-allied health students (pre-PT, pre-OT, pre-PA, etc.). As needed, will assist students devise class schedules each semester and keep students focused on meeting graduation requirements. For productive advising, this will require maintaining files for each advisee. The successful candidate may engage in initiatives for recruiting, maintaining internship connections and building a network of contacts to assist our students in tapping into the wealth of the chemistry community found in the Washington, D.C. area. Collectively these activities may comprise 6 semester hours.
  • Oversee undergraduate teaching assistants and waste management operations. Other duties involved in maintaining normal operation of the laboratory areas may also be necessary. These responsibilities work toward the greater goal of developing and improving the over-all quality of the Biochemistry program.
  • Serve on at least two college committees, one of which will eventually be the Pre-Professional School Screening Committee. As a contributing faculty member, regular involvement in the college community is highly desirable. Develop a network of contacts to assist our students in tapping into the wealth of the chemistry community found in the Washington, D.C. area. The end goal for this may include field trips possibilities, internships, and research assistantship for qualified students.
